So this is funny. I am Alyssa, the owner of Home Yoga & Barre, and I am writing Teacher Tuesday about myself this week.
The goal of these posts is to introduce everyone to some of the very special souls that make up our community.
1. How long have you been a yoga teacher?
I've been teaching yoga for four years and have seen the way I teach evolve, much like a "practice" in itself. I used to teach a more active "power" yoga and have since found a more balanced practice catering to mindfulness and spirituality and slow, gentle movements.
2. What brought you to yoga?
I hurt my IT Band training for two half marathons - my first long races. I began going to yoga on and off for a year with a friend for a purely physical practice, just to help me stay healthy to run. I then committed to a "40 Day Challenge", where we tuned into meditation, journaling, and our practice. After this challenge, the meditation and spirituality clicked for me and I was hooked. I knew I then wanted to help others feel how I feel through this practice.
3. How has yoga changed you? Physically and/or mentally.
Mentally, I'm much more in touch with my feelings. I used to settle for life and things that happened to me. Now I take control. I know when I'm unhappy and I face those fears I used to run from. Sometimes the best thing to do isn't the easiest thing to do.
Physically, I've slowed down. I'm able to know when I'm putting too much on my plate and I can feel this in my body. I'm also able to tell what sitting or running too much do to my body, and when a "planned" workout may not be what's best for me. It may be a night of Yin Yoga to let go.
4. What intrigued you about teaching at Home Yoga & Barre?
Well duh, I own the place. :) I wanted to create a space that I wasn't able to find in driving distance, outside of where I did my teacher training at Peace of Mind Yoga in Conyngham, PA. I wanted that light feeling with no intimidation. Hugs and love all around. Truly being involved in the community and bringing that positive energy to NEPA along with other studio owners and business owners that feel the same way.
NEPA has a lot of people that talk negatively about it and say how other places are "better" and how you can't accomplish anything here or it's where "dreams go to die". I don't feel that way and I know others that feel the same as me. We can make this place BETTER. Why would we run from the opportunity to make a difference to people here?
This is what I hope people may be able to see through our studio and the community around us. There is SO much opportunity. You just have to look for it and it'll be ALL YOU SEE.
5. What's your favorite post class meal or snack?!
A frozen Burrito. Burritos and frozen food that's "not so bad for you" is my favorite, because I'm always on the go.
6. Complete this phrase..."On a typical Saturday you can find me..."
On Saturday's I teach a morning yoga class and usually take Lucy's Barre class at the studio. Then I'm either teaching Brewga at Susquehanna Brewing Co. in Pittston OR I'm probably reading a good book, heading to my family's home to see my cuddly cat and family, or fueling my "re-decorating" addiction that my boyfriend loves oh so much.
